Helen is a full-time teaching fellow, teaching social psychology and qualitative research methods at the University of Bath. She has worked for over
ten years in various teaching positions, including teaching sociology
undergraduates at the University of Exeter and psychology
undergraduates at the University of the West of England. Helen is also in the process of completing her PhD with the Department of Sociology at the University of Exeter, England, under the supervision of Prof. Grace Davie. Her research explores the ways in which poetry slam participants in England and the U.S. understand their selves, others and their worlds in the context of slam and performance poetry. This work draws on the theories of social constructionism, symbolic interactionism, discourse analysis, and the work of Pierre Bourdieu and Antonio Gramsci. It takes a broad, interdisciplinary approach, which is best described as social scientific. In her spare time, Helen writes and performs poetry, and runs the Poetry&Words stage at Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts.
