RESEARCH INTERESTS
Helen's research has drawn on social psychology, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies and other disciplines to achieve an eclectic, multi-layered understanding of the arts, popular culture and the construction of self and identity in society. Her doctoral work explores the ways in which poetry slam - a kind of knockout oral poetry contests - is constructed and reconstructed in different social, historical and geographical contexts. Particular attention was paid in this research to how slam participants mobilise discourses around slam to construct their identities. Her subsequent research has built on this, investigating educational and health-based applications of poetry. At present she is engaged in several research projects focusing on: students' internet use; poetic interventions in dementia; and the creative processes of novices and professionals.
